Use gamification in your event
This article explains the gamification feature and how you can set it up in your event.
Why use gamification?
Gamification is a great feature to increase app and event engagement with attendees, while also making the event more fun. There are three main advantages to using gamification on our platform:
-
Influence your attendees' behaviour by customizing the achievements and rewards in the studio.
-
The leaderboard is synced in real-time, which can increase your attendees' motivation and fulfilment, leading to higher app engagement.
-
Have your gamification sponsored with exhibitor-related achievements and prizes.
Enable gamification
First, make sure to turn on gamification in your event settings. You will then see the available categories and achievements.
An achievement is a set of actions for which a user can score points, such as viewing items on the programme or asking a question in a session. Depending on the settings, the action has to be completed a number of times to complete the achievement and earn points. Achievements can be customised individually to make them as easy or challenging as you wish, and are divided into 4 categories:
- Analytic: Achievements related to viewing content and spending time on the platform
- Engage: Achievements related to interactivity during sessions, engaging with other attendees and making the most of the platform
- Social: Achievements related to networking with attendees and exhibitors
- Scavenger hunt: Customisable achievements specially made for designing a scavenger hunt

You can enable or disable achievements with the checkbox on the top left.
Customise achievements
Keep in mind that when changing levels, parameters, or points of an active achievement, the progress of all users is affected: points gained by users for that achievement will be reset to 0. Make sure to complete your gamification setup before you start promoting your app.
Customise Analytic, Engage and Social achievements
With the edit icon on the top right, you can customize the following items of an achievement:
- Task parameter: the number of times the user needs to perform the task to complete an achievement.
-
Points: the points that are granted when an achievement is completed.
- Reward: optionally, a reward can be set when an achievement is completed, consisting of an image or video, title, text and button.

The achievement's title and subtitle are automatically translated based on the selected language, but can also be customised. Go to the Language tab in the event settings, and search for achievement to find all achievement-related strings, or search for a specific achievement.
Setting up a Scavenger hunt
A scavenger hunt is a little different from the other achievements. With a scavenger hunt, you can encourage your attendees to go around the venue to collect QR codes, for example of exhibitors or sessions.
It works as follows: attendees search for physical QR codes placed throughout your venue and scan them using the in-app QR code scanner. When scanned, the QR code opens a page in the app, and contributes to the achievement. After scanning a number of QR codes, the achievement is completed, the points are granted, and if set, the reward is shown.
On the scavenger hunt page, you can set the following:
- Name: the name of your scavenger hunt
- Subtitle: the subtitle of the hunt, that should explain what kind of hunt it is and what kind of codes need to be scanned.
- Task parameter: the number of times the user needs to scan a (different) QR code.
-
Points: the points that are granted when this number of QR codes has been scanned.
-
Items: here you can set the items that contribute to the hunt and create the QR codes for them. These are the codes that you will need to put up in your venue. Just start entering the object's name in the text box, and click the object as soon as it appears.
You will not see the QR code directly after adding an object. Just save your hunt and then go back in to allow downloading or sharing the code.
- Reward: optionally, a reward can be set when an achievement is completed, consisting of an image or video, title, text and button.

Attendee experience on the app
On the platform, you can find the gamification features in your profile menu, below My Achievements. Here you can find all tasks you can perform to collect points.

The achievements are grouped in the different categories: Analytic, Engage, Social and Scavenger hunt. Only categories that have achievements enabled are shown. When areward is available, a button is added right below the achievement. The button will open a modal like this:
On the leaderboard, you can see how well you perform compared to the other participants.
Best-practice tips
-
Make sure to only include achievements related to your app’s features. For example, remove the achievements related to the social wall if this is not part of your app.
-
Assign more points to the parts of the conference that matter most to you. For example, if you want to increase networking activity, award more points in the Social category, and maybe even add rewards to trigger engagement.
- Do you want to encourage your attendees to go around the venue? Set up a scavenger hunt! You can also use this to attract attendees to certain (sponsored) exhibitors.
- Are you having (sponsored) awards? Create an information page in the app or a news message to announce the prizes. This will trigger your users to complete that achievement, and to get more app engagement.
-
Test your achievements prior to going live with your app, so you can explore the gamification. To avoid being on the top of the leaderboard at the start of the conference, enable and disable an achievement to reset all scores.
